Add power to your purpose, a ‘why’ process you've never heard before

We all know the importance of having a ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is your purpose and your reason for doing what you do. But what happens if you struggle to stay connected to your ‘why’, or you’re unsure how to uncover it?

Well, Boss in today's episode I share a new way to approach your ‘why’, breaking it down into three parts, with each component being just as important as the other.

First of all I explain the power of having a ‘why’. You ‘why is your purpose and it underpins your goals. It also helps you stay committed to your actions, which enables you to reach your goals. Your ‘why’ is what keeps you moving forward when times are tough and connects you to something bigger than you on the daily. Your ‘why’ is a fantastic compass - without it, it's easy to get lost with no direction.

I break down the three components that make up your ‘why’:

  1. Your emotional ‘why’

  2. Your business ‘why’

  3. Your material ‘why’

I talk you through the components of each of these, how to identify them and how they contribute to your life and your business.

I explain how these three three components may be fixed or may be seasonal. Regardless, unpacking these three components is what is going to supercharge your year because you will be so clear on why you are doing what you're doing for your clients, for yourself, and for others that are important for you in your life.

Running a business can be hard work and sometimes you need something bigger than yourself and bigger than what you're doing to connect to, to drive you forward so that you can maintain an awesome mindset and build momentum even when you are working through hard seasons in your business.

When you know and connect to all three ‘whys’ you are supported to take aligned action and so much more of your business will click into place.

Finally, I share a free resource that I have developed that is the perfect tool to go with this conversation - it will help you to define your own three ‘whys’.

Topics We Covered:

[00:00:00] We all know how important having a why is. Your why is your purpose or your reason for doing what you do. But what happens if you struggle to stay connected to your why on the daily, or worse yet, you know that it's important to have a why. And you don't know what yours is, or perhaps you are unsure how to uncover it.

[00:00:25] Well, boss, in today's episode, I'm gonna share with you something different and perhaps maybe something that you've not heard before. We're gonna break down your why into three parts, with each component being just as important as the other. Are you ready? Let's go. Hello boss and welcome back to the Run Your Business Like a Boss podcast.

[00:01:26] Thank you so much for joining me for today's conversation. Can I ask you, Can you see the finish line now? For those of you who are in Australia and New Zealand, I know that you are most likely getting ready for the summer holidays. Those in the Northern Hemisphere I'm sure you are getting ready for the winter holidays.

[00:01:48] But here in Australia, this is our big holidays, right? So there's going to be a level of intensity that's going on right now with delivering all the client work, getting all the ducks in a row. Getting ready to take a break and just that. "Phew!. I'm exhausted. It's been a big year", so if you are feeling all the feels right now, please know that I see you.

[00:02:11] Here's the thing. Over the next couple of weeks, you're about to shift from doing your deliverables, working hard in your business, to reflecting back on the year that was and one of the things that I encourage you to do as part of this reflection process is to consider your why, especially coming into 2023.

[00:02:32] Because I really believe that when you connect to your why and your purpose, it will supercharge your results. And the reason for this is because your purpose or your why underpins your goals. It also helps you to stay committed to your actions, which will help you to see through your goals.

[00:02:52] It's what's going to help you keep moving forward when times are tough and help you to connect to something bigger than you on the daily. Your why is a fantastic compass. Without it, it's easy to get lost with no direction. Now, I encourage you to stay tuned right to the end of this conversation to learn more about a free resource that I have developed that is the perfect tool to go with this conversation.

[00:03:21] This tool will help you to define your own three whys. Okay, so this concept of the why is spoken about a lot. I'm sure it's something that you have seen on Instagram and various articles spoken about on podcasts. In fact, I have a episode number 50 I think it is, which is where I talk about why you shouldn't be sharing your why with your audience.

[00:03:45] And the reason why I speak about this is because the why concept that Simon Sinek, who is really the pioneer of this concept, speaks on is that the why is about your company, it's about your business. It's about the impact that your business offers for your clients, right? But often what happens is that online, a lot of people confuse that with sharing their personal why.

[00:04:10] And so in this conversation, I wanna break down the three components that make up your why. So the first component is your emotional why. The second is your business, why and the third is your material why.. When you know and connect to all three of these, it really does support you to take that aligned action and so much more in your business will click into place.

[00:04:36] So let's begin with the emotional why. When you think of your why, I bet this is what you think of. It's about what you get as part of your business. So it's kind of like your personal why. This can be both intrinsic and extrinsic, but why do you do what you do on a personal level? For many, this looks like freedom and flexibility.

[00:05:00] Freedom to be your own boss. To design your business your way, freedom to work, when and where you like freedom to work your own hours in a way that feels good for you. What about your family? Perhaps maybe that's linked into your emotional why. I know certainly for me, being [00:05:20] able to have that flexibility in my business enables me to be more present for my family, so that's definitely part of my own emotional why.

[00:05:27] There are other things, of course, and it doesn't need to be one single thing. It can actually be a combination of a few different things that feels right for you. Perhaps it's that you wanna build something from the ground up yourself. Because, hey, I get it. Building a business from the ground up and creating this empire that you are building is something really special.

[00:05:50] Maybe it's that you are keen to travel around the world now that things have opened up and you like that idea of the laptop lifestyle, and so working for yourself is what makes that possible for you. Whatever you think is your personal reason for having the business that you have is really what's linked into your emotional why.

[00:06:11] Knowing your personal and emotional why is key. But as I said in episode 50, this is not necessarily something that you share outwardly with your audience, prospects, and community because it's not necessarily overly relevant to those people, unless of course you are helping others to have what you have.. So your emotional why is your personal reason for why you do what you do.

[00:06:36] The second part of your why is your business why. Why do you do what you do for your clients? Why is your business here and what impact are you looking to create in this world for others? Your business, why is more of that piece that you wanna share outwardly, and this is what Simon Sinek speaks about.

[00:06:59] He speaks more about the business why, and why your products and services exist for others. This is knowing the intrinsic and extrinsic benefits and impact of your work. It's also the effect of the transformation that's made possible by what you do for your clients through your products and services.

[00:07:18] as an example, let's say you're a copywriter, and what you do is you write text for websites and marketing collateral. So maybe the why behind what you do is you love to write persuasive texts so that your clients have more sales in their business. That's not necessarily the why. That's the impact of what you.

[00:07:43] But maybe your why is that it really fills your cup to know that you are helping other business owners to build their business and make money and be able to live life on their terms. Maybe it's that you love the fact that you help other business owners to step into their own power with words, and that just feels so incredible, right?

[00:08:04] So this is like your business why, and this is something that you can share with your audience. So for me, my business why is that I absolutely feel so passionate about helping business owners to not only have a successful business, but to have a sustainable business that supports their personal goals.

[00:08:26] That is something that I feel so passionate about because in my own journey I've experienced burnout a couple of times. I've also experienced a business where I really needed this support. I fell out of love with it, and I had to ultimately sell that, and I don't want that for anybody else. So being able to support my clients to build that sustainable business, both from a revenue perspective as well as from a time and energy perspective, is what makes me wake up every morning and love what I do.

[00:08:57] So this really is about digging deep into how you help your clients and what's the meaning behind it. So maybe a simple framework might be, I help my clients to insert the blank, which means insert the blank for them, which means, and just keep digging deeper into the Which means? Which means, which means you'll feel it in your, I don't know.

[00:09:21] I know this is gonna sound a little woo woo, but you'll feel it in your heart when you hit that point where it really means something to you. But if you keep digging deep into what your work does for others, you'll get to that business why. Okay, we're gonna hit the final piece of the puzzle, and this is probably the one you've been waiting for because I think that the other two is spoken about quite a bit.

[00:09:46] This is your material why, and perhaps the lesser known cousin of the three whys. And in fact, I don't know that anyone talks about these three whys. I've certainly never heard anyone talking about it before. your material, why is probably a little bit more of an extrinsic driver for you when it comes to your business.

[00:10:06] So your emotional why is that feeling you get that purpose. Maybe unlocking personal pieces around time and energy and freedom and flexibility and all of that. Your material why comes back to what you get through your business. Maybe this is that you are seeking financial freedom.

[00:10:26] Where you can earn income on your terms, that you can pay your mortgage, take holidays, buy a new car, have a renovation, help retire your loved one. You know, these are all [00:10:40] things that are maybe tied deeper back into your material why. This is more about the financial drivers

[00:10:49] that come from your business that impact you personally. . And you might be thinking, Hey Kristy, this feels strange for you to be talking about because don't you always say, you know, success on your terms?

[00:11:02] Absolutely. But I've never said that you don't deserve to earn a comparable income or higher than if you are out working. I believe that you need to be handsomely rewarded for the work that you do. What I don't go for is at all costs. The hustle culture and this rhetoric number of six figures, seven figures or whatever, because the benchmark is not what the internet tells you to be, but what you want for yourself.

[00:11:29] What makes sense for you, even as you are reflecting on this year and getting ready for next year, what personal financial goals do you have? What are you setting up success for? Maybe not only next year, but perhaps maybe the years beyond that.

[00:11:43] So really thinking about what is your material why or your material purpose, what are you wanting to fund . Through the work that you do? And there is a real personal lever that you pull when you are connected to an income that you earn

[00:11:58] that's for a reason. So often we think, oh, we just need to earn that money because that's the income that I wanna earn. No , no. I want you to think about what is that money for Now, it might be that yes, it goes towards your family, but how can you make that more exciting and more connective for you? So there's something deeply connective when you can create A material why around your purpose. here's what I mean. Let's say you want to budget for earning an extra $30,000 next year, and that $30,000 means that your significant other can pull back work for one day a week, and they can work four days a week, and you get to supplement that through your business.

[00:12:45] How incredible would that be? Or maybe it's that you wanna take your family for their trip of a lifetime, and that's gonna cost you $30,000, well then that's the extra budget that you wanna create for next year. But knowing that your funding the family holiday is so exciting and is something incredibly powerful for you to work towards.

[00:13:09] Maybe it's not that at all. Maybe it's that you want to build new products that create greater scalability and freedom, so maybe that you can spend more time committing to another business that you're looking to build, or a personal venture that you're looking to undertake. There are no rules when it comes to thinking about your material.

[00:13:36] So here's the thing when it comes to your why or your three pieces of your why, maybe some of that is fixed and maybe some of that is more seasonal. Regardless really unpacking all three components is what is going to supercharge your year next year, because you are gonna be so clear on why you are doing what you're doing for your clients, for yourself, and for others that are important for you in your life.

[00:14:03] Let's be clear, running a business, it can be hard work sometimes, and sometimes you need something bigger than yourself, bigger than what you're doing to connect to, to drive you forward so that you can maintain an awesome mindset and build momentum even when you are working through hard seasons in your business.

[00:14:26] That is the power of being fueled by purpose.

[00:14:30] So I mentioned at the beginning of the episode that I have a complimentary resource to support you with this, I've created a little workbook that asks you some self-coaching prompts to help you dig deeper and uncover what your emotional, business and material why is.
