5 ways to get more out of your day

Time is the most precious resource for us as business owners. But if you get to the end of the day and you feel like you have not accomplished anywhere near as much as what you had hoped then today’s conversation is for you.

On the podcast today I’m sharing five tactical tools that will empower you to move through your day with greater efficiency and structure, so you can get more out of your day.

I discuss the importance of creating space in your day to fill your cup. We also identify some common time leaks and what you can do to navigate away from these.

Being clear on your priorities and then integrating these into your daily and weekly schedules is vital. We discuss how to manage your time and energy to avoid the all-too-common inefficiency of overworking.

Finally we run through the value of knowing your triggers. Identifying how and why you procrastinate, as well as some common ways you may chase dopamine throughout the day, can be powerful for keeping your day on track.

The common thread running through tje episode today is that it's so important to shift your mindset from being task focused to being output focused. The tips I share will help you stay on track, avoid the busywork, procrastination and overwhelm and get you kicking your business goals.

Topics We Covered:

[00:00]: If you get to the end of the day and you feel like you have not accomplished anywhere near as much as what you had hoped then today’s conversation is for you.

[1:58]: This episode I’m sharing some tactical tools with you around how to move through the day with more efficiency and structure.

[2:08]:I’ve been working from home for 12 years and have had to be self motivated and manage my time effectively. What I’ve had to master in this process is my output. Output is about moving towards your goals, rather than ticking off tasks.

[3:00]: Sometime we can become very task focussed, and tasks are not often the activities that will yield results for yourself, your business or your clients.

[3:17]: #1 Fill your cup. This is more about taking some space (over “self-care”).

[4:33]: Create some space between your morning admin and your open for business hours.

[5:08]: #2 Find your leaks. Observe yourself, pay attention as you move through your day. Social media is a common tiem leak (surprise, surprise!).

[6:54]: Another leak is busy work. We all want to tick those tasks off our to do list, but your high level goals lose out when this is all you do.

[8:06]: We often delay working on our business in lieu of busy work.

[8:35]: Another leak is task switching. Deep work requires attention and focus, and switching between tasks uses up time. Shut down all your apps, use time blocking - there are lots of methods. Be mindful and aware to stay focused.

[9:50]: Another leak is simply doing too much. Don’t do everything. What can you outsource, streamline, automate or remove altogether?

[10:20]: #3 Know your priorities. These can be identified as strategic (understanding your business bedrock, in particular your vision =and where you’re taking your business long-term), as well as your goal setting process (medium and short range goals) and planning cadence. How do you incorporate that in a daily and weekly process? Be really clear on what your priorities are, and how these are incorporated into your daily and weekly work.

[11:34]: #4 Manage your time and energy so that you’re not overworking. Work out your boundaries and stick to them. Working beyond this is hugely inefficient.

[13:40]: Being a business owner requires so much creative energy, and you won’t have this if you’re burnt out or overworking.

[14:15]: Time block. If you’ve got big projects on, you need to block out regular time to achieve your deliverables. Check out my blog post on time blocking.

[15:02]: Don’t overcommit. We often think we are capable of achieving more than we can.

[16:03]: #5 Know your triggers. If you find yourself procrastinating, take time to identify your triggers. We run through the common culprits.

[17:00]: Procrastination can also be a way of seeking dopamine.

[17:54]: Create short milestones - break big projects into small chunks so that you can reach mini milestones along the way.

[19:15]: It’s so important to shift your mindset from being task focused to being output focused.

[19:48]: I really do hope this episode helps you get more out of your day. Try taking even just one of these tips and implement it into your day.
