Who you need to be in 2024 to achieve your dream life and business

In order to have what you want this year, it’s important to first identify the type of person you need to become. Imagine yourself on December 31, 2024 reflecting on all the incredible achievements and growth you've experienced in the past 12 months.

Who is that person?

What mindset do they have?

What actions do they take?

You'll find that by embodying the mindset and beliefs of this future you, you can pave the way to success.

Today on the podcast, I build on the the previous episode where I discussed setting a clear vision and goals for what you wanted to achieve this year in your business. It’s great to have goals, but if you don’t look at what you need to change, or who you need to step into in order to achieve them, you won’t get very far.

In addition to understanding who you need to be, incorporating an action and completion bias is crucial. It’s normal to face obstacles and setbacks along the way, but it's how we respond to them that matters. By focusing on taking consistent action and completing tasks, you build trust in yourself and progress follows.

Creating a balance between your lifestyle and business is essential. Although it's important to dedicate effort and energy to your business, remember to prioritise other aspects of your life as well. Reflect on the kind of life you want to lead and find a balance that supports your overall well-being. I know for me, it all seems to be moving very fast and I don’t want to look back on my life many years from now unhappy that I spent too much of my life working, instead of enjoying family time.

I want you to take away from this episode an understanding that you can claim control over your business and life. Take the lead and make decisions that align with your goals and vision. Don't be a passive player; instead, actively shape your future. Ask critical questions, challenge the status quo, and don't be afraid to make changes or pivot if necessary. You have the power to create meaningful change.

Topics We Covered:

[00:00:00] Kristy: I wonder, what is the secret to achieving your goals this year? Many say it's using the coaching framework of Be Do. Have. This framework was made famous by Stephen Covey, Although I believe its origins stem further back than Covey's work.

[00:00:18] Regardless, in today's episode, we're going to explore how to use this model to have your best and most intentional year yet. Are you ready? Let's go. Hello boss. And welcome back to part two of our new year series. Last week we explored intentions and setting goals for the year. And may I suggest if you haven't had a chance to listen to that episode, hit pause now, go take a listen to that one because it really is the perfect prelude to this episode.

[00:01:22] Once you're done with that episode. Come back and listen to this one. Okay. So I'm going to assume now that you've already listened to episode one of the series. And I want to just quickly share with you an overview of the Be Do Have process. Now you probably have heard this before because it is widely used, commented on and explored in the online business space.

[00:01:45] But even if you haven't heard, I think that you'll be able to grab the concept pretty quickly and run with it In order for you to have what you want this year which we defined in last week's episode, you need to identify the type of person [00:02:00] or who you need to be, in order to achieve these goals.

[00:02:04] Then from there, you can create an action plan of what you need to do in order to achieve your goals. This week's episode is in the pocket of understanding who you need to be in order to achieve the goals that you set for yourself last week. In next week's episode, we'll explore what you need to do. The key step here is to understand what habits, systems and personal operating model that you need to construct in order to To be the person that you need to be to hit those goals. So I'm going to throw down some examples and some prompts for you to think about, but I want you to bear in mind that you are unique to me and unique to the next person and unique to the next person.

[00:02:49] Every business and every life is individual. So take what you want from this and leave the rest. I do encourage you to spend a little bit of time outside of this episode, exploring what are those systems? What are those habits and personal operation model that you want to put in place to ensure that you're going to have your best year yet?

[00:03:10] So the first step in the process, I would encourage you to get really clear on your mindset, your beliefs, and your self identification. This is really, I guess you could say a summary of who you are. We all come to our business with a blueprint of experiences that informs the way we view ourselves, the way we view our business, the way we view where we sit in the market.

[00:03:44] These things can be good, but also these things can actually be harmful to your results. So, what I would encourage you to do is to get really honest with yourself. And this might be a little bit [00:04:00] of reflection of the past year or two or maybe even three years around what you believe the things are that could be keeping you stuck. The stories that you tell yourself about who you are that prevents you from hitting those goals or moving into next levels.

[00:04:23] So once you're clear on what your current reality is, then I want you to think about, okay, if I don't want to be that, who do I need to be? What is the mindset of the person who hits that goal? What is the mindset of the person that takes action to hit that goal? And what are the beliefs that I need to uphold in order to dig in, do uncomfortable work, do challenging work and really move forward in leaps and bounds.

[00:04:56] The overarching theme of this is how you identify yourself. Do you describe yourself as, you know, just, I've just got a little business and you know, I just, or are you someone who's building an agency that works with XYZ and I employ X number of people and I'm running a business that is working towards XYZ vision.

[00:05:22] So being really strong in the conviction of what you're doing, who you are and what you're building And this. ties in beautifully with one of the first steps of last week's episode, which is really connecting to that vision. So often we're just playing year by year, we're running our business month by month or quarter by quarter or year by year, but we're not really thinking about the bigger thing that we're building here.

[00:05:50] And this bigger thing that you're building really requires someone who is at the driver's seat of this and building and moving the business forward. Okay. So first [00:06:00] step is to get clear on your mindset, your self beliefs, and your self identification. Second step is to have an action and completion bias.

[00:06:11] I get it. Sometimes we just don't hit our goals. Sometimes we quite quit our goals. Sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes we actually don't feel connected to our goals anymore.

[00:06:22] However, as I said in last week's episode, this is something that is repeated over and over and over again, we lose trust in ourselves. And if you think about any relationship, be it a friend, a partner, a spouse, your children, your parents, and more importantly, yourself. If that person lets you down over and over and over again, you start to create a story around who they are.

[00:06:51] You start to create a description of the type of person they are. And so if you think about that for yourself, if you're someone who doesn't take action on goals that are set, or you take action, but you don't complete them, then you're going to always believe that you are someone who doesn't work towards their goals or never hits their goals.

[00:07:13] So having an action and completion bias in 2024 is a fantastic way to shake off those past stories and beliefs that you have on yourself.

[00:07:23] Another way to look at this is think about your future self. Think about future you on December 31 and think about how proud you are of past you who dug in, did the work, took action, was brave, leaned into those goals, leaned into the work and are sitting there celebrating and reflecting on all the things that they have achieved and how far they have come over the past 12 months.

[00:07:51] Really thinking about how do you want to reward that future self? What do you want that future self to say about you this year?

[00:07:59] The next [00:08:00] one, I think ties in beautifully with the previous two points and I've mentioned this in the past is to have radical self awareness and there is an absolute and here, self compassion. I've made no secret of the many years I've been working on myself. I remain a work in progress. I remain someone who is a student of life. I have not arrived, but I have come such a long way. So regardless of where you're at in your self discovery and personal development journey, really intentional around radical self awareness and self compassion is what is truly going to move the needle on your business and in your life.

[00:08:52] So how do you do that? Well, here's a simple few steps to get you thinking. The first thing is to examine And challenge your thinking. if something comes up and you feel envious or you're feeling negative emotions, or you have a reaction that feels strong in your body and tight and restrictive, yes, you're going to feel those things.

[00:09:16] And it's okay to have a myriad of emotions. This is not about creating a life full of sunshine and lollipops and rainbows. But in order for you to grow, you need to understand what that trigger is. Understand what is causing you to feel the way you feel. And the reason for this is because that feeling that is constrictive and restrictive will invariably cause

[00:09:43] action that will have a negative impact without self awareness and self compassion. Okay. So the feelings don't go away and I assure you, I still have those tricky feelings. I still feel those things, but I'm so [00:10:00] much better at getting clear on what's causing it and self coaching to move through it so that I don't take action in a negative way.

[00:10:10] What I think is super important about the examination and challenging of your thinking is to pair that with self compassion. We don't want to have a tear down or a bring down in your mind of what a horrible person I am because I feel like this because I, I feel negative towards this, or I'm triggered about that, or this has made me feel horrible.

[00:10:35] Who thinks these things? Why am I thinking these things? Because when you feel like that, you are not giving your brain an opportunity to find a new way. To discover what it is that is causing those negative thoughts and in turn find a way of being able to either prevent that, work through it, or be aware that it's coming so that it doesn't take you by surprise.

[00:11:04] As I said, negative thoughts, challenging thinking, it's going to happen. It's going to happen. You are in your human experience. I am in my human experience, but in order for you to grow personally, you need to really dig into this year, radical self awareness and self compassion because it's this that fuels your actions.

[00:11:28] The next thing I encourage you to think about is your lifestyle and business balance. So often I speak to business owners they put it all on the line. They put it all into their business and there are times, and I've spoken about this at length on this podcast, there are times where it's important to dig deep, to go hard, to be in the sprint. To use all of your energy for a short period of time, but you can't run at a hundred meter pace for a marathon distance.

[00:12:06] You know what? You might be fit, you might be healthy, you might be loving it, you might be in the zone and you might go for it, but you get either halfway or even to the finish line. and you crumble. And then you've burned out so much that you want to tear the whole thing down. So this isn't a permission slip to not do anything this year. Instead, this is an opportunity for you to take some time right now to think about what does that balance look like for you this year? And we covered this in last week's episode where I spoke about what are your personal priorities for this year?

[00:12:44] What are the things that are going to be important? What do you need to set aside time, energy and capacity for? So that you know, what is realistic for you to do and achieve in your business. When you can try and get that balance and it's not going to be center into the middle.

[00:13:02] It's going to be, you know, swinging from left to right. But ideally, you don't want it to always sit on one side or the other. So get really honest with yourself about what kind of life you want to live. And I, I'm 45. I feel like I am in the slipstream. Life is going so quick and I am loving every second of it, but it is going so quick.

[00:13:24] I don't want to get to the end of my life and go. Gosh, I was so glad that I didn't make time for my family, that I didn't make time for my health, that I didn't make time for me and that I worked really hard and that, you know, I have this business that I built that's this, that and the other, but all the other things, oh geez, they're an absolute mess, but that's okay.

[00:13:43] I don't want that. And I don't know that you do either. Many of us start our business for a lifestyle. We start our business to have a little bit of freedom and flexibility that we can't have in a PAYG job. And if you don't have any semblance of a [00:14:00] lifestyle beyond your business, then dig into this one.

[00:14:03] Think about it. Think about where you can create space and sustainability in your business this year to support that.

[00:14:10] The next one is aligning what you do to a deeper purpose you will have a business mission or maybe you don't, but your mission essentially is the purpose. It's the impact of why you do this particular business for others, for the impact that you create in this world. And This is your business why, this is your business purpose, but there is also a material why, and that is totally fine to have, that's great to have. How much money you earn to be able to support your family, as well as your emotional why, why you're connected to this for you, for an intrinsic reason.

[00:14:50] I mentioned that in last week's episode that I have a great episode on this entire subject. And if you haven't listened to it, please do go back and listen, because I think that when you're connected to a bigger purpose beyond your day to day doings and, and more in the beings, then you are going to find that

[00:15:10] you step into realms or into tasks or into action or into rooms or situations that maybe you wouldn't have before. Maybe it gives you a little more energy, a bigger boost to go bigger, to go more, to really lean into what needs to be done in order to achieve that goal. And the last one that I encourage you to think about in terms of habit systems and personal operating systems is claiming control.

[00:15:44] So often too often we hand over our power and we become a passive player of your business. We let the business just run on momentum, [00:16:00] We take a back seat to what the business is doing and just have those leads come in and just do that work and just be at the mercy of that client and just keep on rolling on.

[00:16:12] That's fine. If you're happy and your business is doing exactly what you want it to do and you don't want to change a thing. And it's, it's, it's at that point where it does that, but it's not okay if you are resentful of your business, if your business has a life of its own, if you're working with clients that don't fit or serve or appreciate you, or you're doing work that you no longer love and it's okay to outgrow your services, it's okay to outgrow your business model.

[00:16:42] It's okay to outgrow your business. Claim control, be in control, own it, let yourself make the decisions. Get critical with the questions you're asking yourself. Just because your business has been a certain way to this point does not mean it needs to be that same way moving forward, but setting that intention to be in control, to make those decisions, to do the execution.

[00:17:11] That's what's going to ultimately create meaningful change. And if you've got on your goals that you want different things in your business this year, then you're going to have to put a flag stake in the sand and claim control. What you do is important. What you set goals for is important. The action you take is important.

[00:17:36] But I hope you can see by the things that we explored today, who you need to be. The person that you are, the embodiment that you need to have. The combination of habits, embodiment, mindset, beliefs, compassion, love for self. That Is what's going to support you as you take action, [00:18:00] as you towards the goals that you've set for yourself.

[00:18:03] You have got this. I believe in you. You're deserving of anything that you desire. And this Be Do Have framework, it is proven, it is tested, it's not my model. It is something that's been out there in the world, in the ether, for decades. Why not use something that actually gets you results. That will actually move the needle on your business and on your life.

[00:18:29] I hope you've enjoyed this episode. My suggestion to you is to unpack the things that I discussed today, but also go into it for yourself. Think about who do I need to be? Who am I in 2024 to be able to achieve the goals that I set for myself last week?

[00:18:45] That's the big question. And then next week, we're going to talk about what you need to do to get there. If you have a friend who is in business, or even if they're not in business and you think that they're going to enjoy this episode, please send the link. Let them know that these resources are here and available for them, and I would love to be able to support you and anybody else who is ready to do the work on themselves to be able to move their business and life forward.
