Become an Industry Expert: Strategies for Thought Leadership (part 2)

I’m so excited to bring you part 2 of my series on becoming an industry expert where I’m talking all things strategies for thought leadership. If you haven’t already listened to Part 1, make sure you go back and do so before diving into this episode.

In Part 1, I laid the groundwork for your journey into thought leadership. Today I’m delving deeper into how you can step into your role as a trusted industry expert and share your valuable insights with the world. If you're looking to boost your visibility, influence, and impact in your industry, this series is absolutely for you.

In this episode, I encourage you to begin by shifting your mindset. Instead of worrying about how you’ll be perceived, approach every message that you share with the question, "How can I serve?" Building trust and a loyal audience is a natural byproduct of genuinely serving your community. And as you step into your power, you'll attract the right people who need your expertise. This is the power of reciprocity.

This episode is full of practical and strategic tools to help you get your unique message out into the world. I dive into how you can use various platforms such as:

Social Media: Most of us are already on social media, but how effectively are we using it? I talk about speaking directly to your audience and going beyond the surface level to address the deeper problems and concerns of your ideal client.

Podcast Guesting: If you're not hosting your own show, consider being a guest on other podcasts, YouTube channels, or live events. I talk about the importance of pitching yourself thoughtfully and effectively to really showcase what you have to offer.

Blogging and Article Writing: Don't underestimate the power of blogs and articles. This is an incredible way to practise the skill of articulating your voice and putting your message out there. I talk about consistently honing in on your message and how this discipline prepares you for PR pitches and other opportunities.

I also talk about hosting events, creating courses, and offering free resources like lead magnets to educate your audience further.

Remember, big results come from consistent and persistent small actions. Focus on posting, creating content, and sharing your message regularly. Don't worry about metrics at this stage; just take action and be persistent. What action will you take this week to kickstart your thought leadership journey?

Topics We Covered:

[00:00:00] Kristy: This is episode number two of the two part series, become an industry expert: strategies for thought leadership

[00:00:07] over these 2 episodes, I'm helping you develop your thought leadership and step into your position as a trusted industry expert. This 2 part series is for anyone who is looking to increase their visibility, their influence and their impact. For anyone that has knowledge, a message and perspective that helps others in their journey.

[00:00:33] And spoiler alert. As I discussed in the first part, that boss is you, you're already verified as you've built a business from this knowledge base in the first episode, I helped you lay down the foundations for why this is a good move for you and your business and helped you to figure out the topics you will dive deeply into

[00:00:59] and share with others. Today, I'm going to share with you how to get visible, how to spread your message. Are you ready? Let's go Hello boss. And welcome back to the second episode in this two part series. Now, if you haven't already listened to part one, please, can I encourage you to hit pause.

[00:01:55] Don't go any further with this episode before you've listened to last week's episode, which is of course, episode number 129. Head over to that episode, listen to what I share, as well as do the work. This is the foundational piece of becoming that known and trusted expert that I know you are. So with that said, I'm going to assume that you've already listened to part one and you're ready to proceed into part two.

[00:02:22] Now that you know this is something that is available to you, why it supports your business growth goals, along with helping a broader audience, I know you're ready to stop playing small and to begin sharing your message with the world.

[00:02:40] You are ready to start speaking on the topics that you know and hold dear, and you're ready to spread your message. Now, I want to remind you that you don't need to write a book to be able to step into this thought leadership. Although if that is your goal, of course, go for it. But I want you to know that the things that I'm going to share with you today are available to you right now. It's something that you can begin accessing from today.

[00:03:09] And I think you're going to be surprised at how simple this actually is and how achievable this actually is. And that's what I want for you. I don't want you to feel like this is such a huge stretch and something that's unattainable for you. You can start being consistent with sharing your messages in places that maybe you haven't shared in this way before.

[00:03:30] Now, as you begin to share your messages, I want you to frame each of these conversations through the lens of how can I serve? How can I be in service and support others? I want you to forget about what's going to come back to you because that's inevitable. The more that you're out there sharing the messages, creating an impact, sharing your views, sharing your skills, sharing your experience, the more that you're going to build trust and you're going to build an audience that Really does love what you have to share and they know with every fiber of their body that you are the person that's going to help them get their transformation or to overcome the challenge that they're currently experiencing.

[00:04:11] You're going to build trust in a way that you've never done before when you step into this power, when you do this work and it will absolutely attract the right people who need your experience and skills. This is the power of reciprocity. So I want you to shed any fears around getting out there and sharing your message in such a big way. So with all of that said, where and how can you begin sharing this message? So at this point, you've already developed your key talking points. This now is about spreading your message.

[00:04:48] So the first place is probably not going to come as a surprise. It's social media. However, often people are using social media in a very safe way. They're sharing general tips and tricks that really don't stand out from the rest of the pack and very rarely do I see people actually speaking to camera and articulating their message in a way that speaks directly to their ideal audience or their ideal client.

[00:05:18] So, when you think about how you can share your message, there are a number of different ways. So on Instagram, for example, there is an incredible account, which you may already be following. It's Dr. Nicole Lepera, and her account is the Holistic Psychologist. She has such an incredible way of being able to articulate the problems of her audience.

[00:05:45] Nicole has built her self healers as she calls her audience and community exclusively on Instagram before writing her books and launching her courses. Dr. Nicole teaches her audience how to heal through telling them how trauma shows up and presents in their daily lives with informative videos and carousels.

[00:06:09] If you actually look at her Instagram through a lens of how does she get this message across? It's actually really simple. And this isn't about taking what she does and trying to reverse engineer that for your business, but simply understanding the power of communicating your message over and over and over again.

[00:06:29] As I said before, we're too often educating at the surface level. We're not going deep into the problems of your ideal client or audience members. That's what we were diving into in part one of this series was understanding those talking points, getting really clear on your unique message and perspective and how that relates back to your audience and community and prospects.

[00:06:53] So Dr. Nicole Lepera is excellent at understanding the deep rooted challenges of her audience, as well as the basic steps that they need to take in order to move forward. Once you're consuming her content, if this is something that's of interest to you, and you need to take that next step, it would be a no brainer to move forward with Dr. Nicole LePera. She is consistent, she's educational, she's informative, and she's inspirational. All the hallmarks of an excellent thought leader. Her page is also not overly complicated and it's very easy to consume her message and scroll through and binge on all of her posts and videos. I encourage you just to take a look at what she's achieving over there.

[00:07:40] Now, the reason why I wanted to share this with you is because Instagram is an incredibly powerful tool. It's already a tool that you're using in your business, and it's free. It provides you with an opportunity and a platform to be able to share your message and begin to get visible as a thought leader. Forget about what you've already done in the past. Think about this through the lens of how can I be of service? How can I create an impact? How can I be inspirational and influential to my community members? Let go of following trends and posting for the sake of posting. Instead, start posting on the topics that you devised in the last episode and show up as an intentional thought leader.

[00:08:23] Over time, your ideal clients and audience member is going to begin taking notice. Don't worry about the metrics for now. Just start taking action. Remember what I said in the last episode. This is about consistency. So a recap of what to cover inside of social media as a thought leader, talking videos is fantastic for this. It's a great way for people to get connected to your voice, your style, your vibe. You can communicate your message in clear sound bites that are easily consumable and bingeable.

[00:08:57] Using educational and relatable carousels. This doesn't need to be fancy. You don't need to spend a bunch of time doing this. You can simply craft an excellent caption and then relay that copy into carousels. It doesn't need to be fancy, again take a look at Dr Nicole LePera. She's an excellent example of this. If LinkedIn is your preferred platform, start using articles as your preferred method for long form content. Again, you can also be creating longer form videos into LinkedIn as well.

[00:09:30] And an underrated way of being able to boost your own thought leadership is commenting thoughtfully on other people's posts, not in a way that steps you above the original poster, but contributes to the conversation in a positive way. So social media is a great tool that you're already using that you can begin to leverage in an intentional way to boost your thought leadership.

[00:09:54] now another great way of being able to articulate your message, communicate with other audiences is guesting. If you're not already the host of your own show, be it a YouTube channel or a Instagram live channel or a podcast like this, you can start sharing your message by way of being a guest. This is a great way to contribute to someone else's platform in a meaningful way. I want to caveat this though. I receive a ton of pitches for the run your business like a boss podcast. And I'm going to be really clear here that there is so much opportunity for improvement in the way that people pitch their podcast guesting to me.

[00:10:43] And this is why I'm hosting a live masterclass, which is called Podcast Guesting 1 0 1 Strategies to Land Podcast interviews. In this training, I'm going to share with you some ways that you can build rapport and be able to pitch your ideas to incredible hosts of a podcast or a YouTube channel or whatever that might be. If you are keen to introduce podcast guesting into your way of communicating and building your audience, then I encourage you to head down into the link inside the show notes and register today for this event. It's going to be held on Wednesday, the 25th, 10 30 AM Australian Eastern standard time. This masterclass is going to give you all the tools to be able to effectively pitch to podcasts.

[00:11:38] As I said earlier, I receive a ton of podcast guest requests and there is so much opportunity for improvement and to be able to stand out. So, if this is an avenue you're taking, I highly encourage you to jump on board for this training. I won't be holding anything back and there will be an opportunity to ask your question inside of the training, if you can't make the live training still register, you'll also receive the recording afterwards.

[00:12:07] Also, inside of this training, I'm going to give you the assets you need to be a guest speaker because it's more than just pitching your ideas As well as the do's and don'ts for being the most fabulous guest because here's a tip when you are a fabulous guest, the host of the show is going to promote the heck out of your episode, which of course is going to further encourage listeners and in turn, get your message out there and potentially increase your own audience as a result of that. So head down into the show notes, grab the link and register today.

[00:12:41] Another way that you can start to articulate your thought leadership is with your own blogging and article writing. I think often we think blogs are redundant, and this is absolutely not the case, especially if your blogs are optimized for the search engines. because if someone is typing that thing or that problem into Google And you've written multiple articles on the topic, if your website and your blogs are optimized, there is a chance that that's going to pop up on Google.

[00:13:17] And once they're on your website, it gives them an opportunity to learn more about you, read other blogs, potentially head over to whatever platforms you're present on and further binge on your material. Blogging is underrated article writing is underrated. It's also an excellent skill to cultivate, even if no one's reading your blog in the beginning. Getting out there, practicing your writing, practicing getting your message across is only going to help you as a thought leader and to show up as a trusted expert. Remember, this is about sharing your ideas. It's about creating impact and influence and inspiring your community. Don't get too bogged down in who's going to do what after the fact, but rather cultivate these skills. Practice getting your message out there.

[00:14:07] This will mean as you're potentially pitching articles for PR, you've already developed those skills. It's not something that is a big stretch forward because you've been practicing for so long. So if you have a blog section on your website, don't forget about that. That is a great opportunity to be able to connect with your audience. It's also a great way to be able to move people off your social platforms and onto your website with a deep dive on topics that they're genuinely interested in. And of course, when they're on your website, that's an opportunity for you to be able to showcase all the other things that you can help them with potentially within your services.

[00:14:46] And remember, blogs are often conveyed as the written word, but this is also a great way to house videos so you can repurpose some of those videos you're creating for Instagram or LinkedIn over onto your blog to make it more engaging and interactive for the reader.

[00:15:06] Now, I touched on this one in the last point. It's PR. Now, PR can cover pitching for awards for your business. It can also be pitching your stories and articles for news and business outlets. This is a great way to be able to showcase your expertise. Again, leverage other communities and to be able to demonstrate social proof of your expertise.

[00:15:31] I do encourage you, though, to practice that writing, to practice your skill of being able to communicate your message in other areas for you to be able to open up the PR doorways. And another way of being able to show up as a thought leader and expert in your industry is something that you may not have even considered as a pathway to this. It's through education, You can host in person events. It can be intimate or it can be a large audience. It can be paid or unpaid. Also under this umbrella is that you can be a guest speaker at other people's events and share your message that way, but hosting your own events is a great place to start.

[00:16:14] You can also have education as online education. So, as I mentioned before, I'm hosting a masterclass. This is a paid event, and this is something that you too can do inside your business. Think about how can you incorporate more education beyond the tips and tricks and the top fives and the sort of high level content that's really going to support your audience and potentially clients to be able to move forward with the knowledge and experience that you're sharing with them.

[00:16:47] And of course, you can turn this into more formal courses, be it short courses or longer courses, as well as incredible free resources by way of a lead magnet. I have a great episode with jen Donovan, where we were talking about list building and email marketing. That is episode 119. And we talked about lead magnets in that episode. But there are so many ways that you can incorporate education, either formalized or informal within your business to support you with your thought leadership goals.

[00:17:18] Now, I've given you a few ways that you can start to show up as a thought leader in this episode. I really kept this simple so that you can have no barriers to get started. This is something that you can take action on today and I want to remind you, Big results come from consistent and persistent small action. Those small actions, that post, that video, that article, that guest speaking event over and over and over again will have a compound effect and with time, you will be seen as the trusted expert as the thought leader that you already are, but it's about putting in the work.

[00:18:04] It's about taking the small steps. It's about being prepared to be visible and showing up today, tomorrow, and the next day. So what are you going to take action on this week? I want to hear from you. I'd love you to post a picture of somewhere in your office or you taking action or wherever you listen to this podcast of the action you're going to take as a result of listening to this podcast episode. I want you to know that you hit play today because this is clearly something that you want to build on in your business. Don't let this be another episode that you consume and move on to the next thing.

[00:18:46] I've given you the tools to get started. I've given you the tools to take action, to move you forward in this direction. And I know this is what you want, because as I said, you are listening to this episode today and you could listen to a million different podcast episodes. Yet you and me, we're here today together.

[00:19:05] You have an influential voice, your audience, your prospective clients, even your existing clients need to hear this from you. Everyone is going to benefit. Remember, they and you will benefit significantly from you stepping into your power as a thought leader. Boss. I appreciate you so much. I'm so excited to see this begin to roll out for you.

[00:19:31] If this episode served you, may I encourage you to forward it to a friend? This is what this is all about is creating impact and the ripple effect. You can help someone else's business today by sharing this link with them. Again, I'm so excited. I can't wait to see how this all rolls out for you. I appreciate you being here.

[00:19:54] And as always, I look forward to chatting with you next week. This episode was recorded on the land of Killin Darbin. I pay tribute and respect to the Turrbal people, who are the traditional owners and custodians of this land.
