Turning 43: The life and business lessons learned along the way

It’s my birthday! I thought this was a great opportunity to have a relaxed conversation with you on the lessons that have made such a tremendous impact on my life.

In this episode, I’m chatting about 13 significant lessons that I’ve learned that apply to both my personal and professional development. I’m very excited to be sharing these insights and experiences with you in the hope that you can take value out of my story.

I feel truly privileged and grateful to be turning 43 and have this chance to reflect on how I’ve changed over my 20s, 30s and now into my 40s. I would love to encourage you to look back on your past self with kindness and understanding. That person has made you who you are today.

But you know what’s also exciting? In the future, you’ll look back on your present self and thank them for all the hard work they’re putting in now. So take the time to consider, what can you do right now that your future self will absolutely applaud you for?

Now go for it.

Topics We Covered:

[0:52]: It’s my 43rd birthday!

[2:06]: Ageing is a privilege that not everybody has.

[4:08]: I’m very grateful for the life I have, where I live and that I get to run this business.

[5:44]: Lesson 1 - Learning to listen properly. Through leadership and sales, I learned how to be a good listener. I became a better wife, mother and friend.

[7:42]: Lesson 2 - Working on self development.

[9:14]: Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman was pivotal to my personal and professional development.

[10:01]: Lesson 3 - Embracing failure. See my previous episode on fearing failure below.

[11:29]: This doesn’t mean that you have toxic positivity. Analyse and understand what went wrong and how you can learn from the experience in your next project.

[12:23]: Lesson 4 - Trusting my intuition and acting on it.

[14:18]: Lesson 5 - Mindfulness and gratitude. In 2017, I took a positive psychology course with Martin Seligman where I learned so much about focusing on what’s going well and mindfulness and gratitude. I practice journaling, meditating and being super present.

[16:28]: Lesson 6 - Owning what makes me unique. See my previous episode on 3 things that transformed my business below. I took time to consider what makes my business and me unique - I encourage everyone to reflect on it.

[17:54]: Lesson 7 - Leadership. I spent a lot of time investing in learning about leadership.

[18:57]: Lesson 8 - Life is short. See my previous episode on overworking in your business.

[20:43]: Lesson 9 - Minimise the problem. Work out what part of the problem is in your control and just work on that. Let go of what’s not in your control.

[22:08]: Lesson 10 - Celebrating success. The little wins along the way bring you the big results.

[23:49]: Lesson 11 - Cherish your relationships. It’s very easy to take the people in your life for granted.

[24:40]: Lesson 12 - Comparison kills creativity. When you know your own uniqueness, another person 5 steps ahead has 0 bearing on you.

[26:18]: Lesson 13 - Prioritise your health. I was a group fitness instructor for 9 years. I thank my past self for putting in the hard yards to set myself up for success.

[27:34]: Look back on your past self with kindness. Know that what they did is how you got to where you are today. Where you are today will be your past self down the line. So how can you do something today to help your future self?
