Managing your time through the holiday season so you get a break AND maintain momentum in your business

When you’re running your own business it can feel very difficult to switch off and take a holiday. There are always more emails to be answered and tasks on your to-do list just begging to be done. BUT you can’t pour from an empty cup. You need to take time to rest and have a break and this is the perfect time of year to do it!

Most people (including your clients) will also be taking breaks around Christmas and the New Year so the impact on your business will be much less than if you took a break at any other part of the year.

In this episode, I’ll be sharing the simple and effective method I use to manage my time throughout the holiday season whilst ensuring I maintain momentum in my business.

This method is so practical and easy that I’ve been following it for years and it hasn’t let me down yet. I can plan my workload around my holidays and still have quality time with my children and family.

If you can’t afford to take the full 6 weeks out of your business, this structuring will help you to make the most of this season and allow you to maintain momentum in your business.

Don’t forget, you need energy and stamina to accomplish your goals in 2022. Take advantage of this time of year to refill your cup so when you return full time, you’ll be full of excitement, passion, inspiration, and motivation.

Enjoy!

Topics We Covered:

[2:19]: Business owners often underestimate the amount of rest they need and time to take off

[3:40]: It’s unsustainable to be working at a high level all year round without taking time for yourself. Most people (including your clients) will also be taking a break at this time of year so the impact will be much less on your business.

[4:22]: I divide my time into 3 categories: no time, slow time, and go time.

[4:47]: No time: completely switching off of work.

[5:44]: Slow time: slow work. Replying to emails, admin, course work, e-learning, content creation, updating CRM, researching new systems, writing a blog, checking the links on your website, and tax. These are operational tasks.

[6:43]: Go time: Actively working in your business. Client work, client meetings, following up on leads, networking opportunities, going live on Instagram, strategy and planning, recording podcast episodes, onboarding clients, and client outreach.

[7:30]: Firstly, make a decision when you’re going to be back as business as usual. I’m not fully back until the end of January.

[8:49]: Secondly, make a list of everything you want to do and achieve over the holiday period.

[9:15]: Thirdly, map out the calendar ahead. I lock out my ‘no time’ first. Then I jump ahead to ‘go time’ and mark out the calendar for these days. ‘Slow time’ is then integrated around everything else we’re doing in the holidays.

[10:42]: If you can’t afford to take the full 6 weeks out of your business, this is a great method to integrate holidays into your business.

[11:19]: In order for you to achieve your goals in 2022, you’re going to need stamina, energy and fuel.

[11:51]: Listener shout out to Richard from October Blue Ltd, an accounting firm in New Zealand.
